Places to Start

  • Are you an individual looking for funding?
The Foundation Center has listings of resources for individuals seeking funding for education, work related projects, personal assistance or business.
  • Where can I find funding for personal expenses?
Most forms of assistance for personal expenses such as debt relief will come from charitable organizations or government assistance programs, rather than grants from foundations. Foundation grants are generally awarded to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Those that give grants to individuals typically do so to help pay for education or to support artistic or research projects.
  • Where can I find help with medical bills?
Most forms of assistance for medical bills will come from charitable organizations or government assistance programs, rather than grants from foundations. Resources for immediate funding may include local government agencies, local organizations and/or gifts or loans from individuals.
  • Where can I get a "grant" to start a business?
Foundations do not make grants to for-profit businesses. If you are seeking funds to start a for-profit business, please see finding investors for your small business.
